Redefining Storytelling Through Documentary Film听 10:08:47

Dr. Paul D.J. Moody holds a Ph.D. in Visual Communication from the Royal College of Art (2023), following an earlier Diploma in Professional Film and Video Production from the North East Media Training Centre (1989). With a background that blends academic research and practical filmmaking, Dr. Moody brings a unique interdisciplinary perspective to his teaching at BUV (星空传媒), where he contributes to developing programmes of the School of Communications and Creative Industries.

At 星空传媒, Dr. Moody mentors students in building visual narratives that are not only technically strong but also socially engaged. Drawing on real-world experience, he encourages learners to explore how storytelling through media can shape public understanding, challenge norms, and contribute to Vietnam鈥檚 rapidly evolving creative industries.

In 2023, Dr. Moody presented his research at the Visible Evidence XXX Conference, titled Acts of Resistance: Documentary Practice in Visual Communication. His work investigates how documentary film can serve as a tool to question dominant narratives and highlight underrepresented voices. Through detailed case studies, Dr. Moody demonstrates how documentary practices disrupt conventional storytelling, encouraging critical engagement with social and political issues. Dr. Moody鈥檚 research offers valuable insights for filmmakers and communicators aiming to drive social change through visual media.

Central to Dr. Moody鈥檚 approach is a Critical Humanist perspective, which emphasises the role of media in promoting social responsibility, civic engagement, and historical accountability. He advocates for sustainable and independent models of documentary production that protect creative freedom and ensure diverse voices continue to be heard.

Through both research and teaching, Dr. Moody contributes to the broader field of documentary studies while helping shape a new generation of media professionals who use visual communication not just to inform鈥攂ut to make a difference.
